Origin and history
The bell tower of the former church of Saint-Georges de Villaines-la-Juhel is a medieval vestige located in the department of Mayenne, in Pays de la Loire. Built in the 12th century, during the classical Middle Ages, it belonged to a parish church dedicated to Saint George. This bell tower, characteristic of its time, presents a disposition of stones in fish edges, typical of Romanesque architecture.
The original church was demolished in February 1963, but its bell tower was preserved and restored in the same year. Today he retains his function of calling to prayer through his three bells. The windows of the former church were transferred to the church of Saint-Jean de Laval, while the isolated bell tower was inscribed as the Historic Monuments on December 10, 1962.
Located west of downtown Villaines-la-Juhel, rue Saint-Georges, near a retirement home, this bell tower remains an architectural and historical testimony of local religious life. Its conservation illustrates the heritage importance attached to medieval remains in the area, despite the disappearance of the main building.
