Fontaine (Doc. NO CADASTRE ; PUBLIC AREA): registration by order of 4 May 1984
Origin and history
The Cluses Fountain is a public building built in the late 18th century, specifically in 1791. It is located in the Place des Allobroges, in the heart of the town of Cluses, in the department of Haute-Savoie. This monument, typical of the urban developments of the time, reflects the growing need for public water points for local populations, in a context where hygiene and access to water become major concerns.
The fountain was listed as historic monuments by order of 4 May 1984, thereby recognizing its heritage value. It belongs to the municipality of Cluses and is located in the public domain, as indicated by the archives of the Merimée base. Its initial location, mentioned as a place of the Champ-de-Foire in some sources, is now specified at the address 14 Place des Allobroges. This type of monument played a central role in everyday life, serving both as a water supply point and a place of sociability for the inhabitants.
The Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, and more particularly the Haute-Savoie region, has at this time a social organisation marked by agricultural, artisanal activities and a beginning of industrialisation. Public fountains, such as Cluses, symbolize municipal efforts to modernize infrastructure and improve living conditions. Their presence also demonstrates the importance attached to the beautification of urban spaces, in a century when architecture and urban planning become prestige tools for cities.
