Origin and history
The Jesuit College of Valenciennes was founded in 1591, but its current buildings were built from 1601 under the direction of the coadjutor brothers Henri Hoeimaker (for the chapel) and Quirin Huart (for the college). Often damaged by floods of the Scheldt and bombardments (seats of 1656 and 1677), the whole was rebuilt between 1735 and 1751. The Jesuits used it for teaching until their expulsion in 1763, when the buildings changed hands.
The library, which became a municipal one, was classified as a historical monument in 1937, while the former chapel, transformed into a Saint-Nicolas church, was registered in 1968. These two elements illustrate the architectural and educational heritage of the Jesuits in the region. The brick and white stone façade, typical of the late Regency style, and the slate roof testify to their know-how.
The whole also reflects the historical vicissitudes of Valenciennes, marked by conflicts and reconstructions. Today, it houses cultural and religious functions, perpetuating its central role in the city. The location near the Scheldt recalls the environmental challenges the site has faced over the centuries.
