Origin and history

The Collège Notre-Dame-des-Anges de L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, located in the Vaucluse, finds its origins in a Romanesque building erected as a collegiate building in 1222 by the bishop of Cavaillon. Little information remains on this first construction, but it is known that in the 15th century expansion work was undertaken to rebuild the choir. In 1547, the building, threatened with ruin, was the object of several restoration projects, which remained unanswered until 1640, when the collapse of the choir imposed its reconstruction on the same.

The total reconstruction of the nave was launched in 1645 according to the plans of the Avignon architect François de Royers de la Valfenière. The works, begun in 1647, were completed around 1668, but the nave was initially covered with a wooden vault. Thanks to the generosity of the provost of Casal, it was replaced in 1670 by a stone vault. The church, dedicated to Notre-Dame des Anges and placed under the patronage of the Assumption, was consecrated on 29 May 1672. Its interior decoration, marked by strong Italian influence, was enriched until the eighteenth century, notably by works from convents abolished in 1791.

Ranked a historic monument on April 4, 1911, the collegiate church is distinguished by its simple plan: a unique nave of six spans flanked by non-communicating lateral chapels, and a narrower choir, reflecting the age differences between these parts. The facade, sober but elegant, is rhythmic by engaged pilasters and columns, while the interior surprises with its exuberant Baroque decoration. The choir houses a golden altarpiece of the seventeenth century, decorated with a painting by Reynaud Levieux representing the Assumption of the Virgin (1680), framed by statues of saints and allegories of the Vertus, carved by Jean Péru from 1688.

The lateral chapels, dedicated to various religious saints and mysteries, contain carved altarpieces, paintings by provençal masters such as Pierre Parrocel or Nicolas Mignard, and gilded woodwork made by local craftsmen such as Esprit Grangier or Benoît Gilibert. Among the notable works are a Descent of the Holy Spirit copied by Charles Le Brun, or a painting commemorating the end of the plague of 1636, painted by Guillaume-Ernest Grève. The organ, built by Charles Royer in 1648 and rebuilt by Giovanni Mentasti in 1827, also bears witness to Italian influence in the region, linked to the historical presence of the papacy in Avignon.

The building thus illustrates the architectural and artistic evolution of a Provencal church, marked by successive reconstructions and the progressive enrichment of its decor, reflecting both local traditions and transalpine stylistic contributions. Its classification as historical monuments underscores its heritage importance, both for its history and for the exceptional quality of its furniture and interior decorations.
