Origin and history
The collegiate Saint-Martin de Saint-Rémy-de-Provence is a former collegiate in the Bouches-du-Rhône region of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. The building, 48 metres long and 27 metres wide at the transept, has a vault height of 16 metres and a dome culminating at 26 metres. Its architecture blends Gothic elements, such as the 14th century bell tower 45 meters high, with neoclassical additions, including a monumental portal with columns.
Partially rebuilt after a collapse in 1818, the college retained medieval elements, such as the high altar and 14th century marble baptismal fonts. The furniture, installed between 1825 and 1827, includes two shutters of a table of 1503 representing the Virgin with the Child and a bishop. The interior paintings, made in 1874 by Jules Auric, as well as the organ rebuilt by Pascal Quetrin in 1983, testify to his artistic evolution.
Ranked a historic monument in 1984, the college also houses an organ installed in 1923, around which the ORGANA festival is held every year. Its hybrid architecture reflects the transformations experienced over the centuries, while preserving traces of its medieval origin. The building, owned by the municipality, remains an active place of worship and a major cultural heritage of the region.
