Origin and history

The Collège Saint-Nicolas d'Avesnes-sur-Helpe, located in the Northern Department, is a religious building dating back to the 12th and 13th centuries, with major transformations in the 16th century. It is distinguished by its 13th century choir, modified in 1534 to accommodate the stalls of the canons, and a nave rebuilt in stone of Lez-Fontaine after the fire of 1514, financed by Louis d'Albret. Its portal is marked by two imposing pillars supporting a tower, symbol of its dual religious and communal role.

The monument suffered several fires, including the one in 2021 that destroyed the southern altarpiece and damaged the interior. Its belfry, rebuilt in the 16th century after the destruction of the ancient by Louis XI in 1477, houses a historic communal carillon, including the bell the Charlotte, offered by Charles Quint in 1514. This tower, both religious and civil, illustrates the union between the church and the city after the 15th century conflicts.

Ranked a historic monument since 1913, the collegiate house houses remarkable chapels, such as that of Sainte-Anne with a baroque altarpiece and a 15th-century statue, or the chapel of the Virgin, decorated with 18th-century woodwork and paintings by Louis Joseph Watteau. A local legend tells that an apparition of the Virgin surrounded by bees would have saved the city from an invasion in 1498, adding a mystical dimension to her heritage.

Among the personalities related to the building, Jeanne de Lalaing (†1467) and her husband Olivier de Blois (†1433) are buried there. The deans of the college, such as Gilles Albert Denis or Canon Bouché, marked its administrative history until the 20th century. The building remains a symbol of the resilience and identity of Avesnes-sur-Helpe, between medieval heritage and Renaissance transformations.
