Origin and history

The collegiate Saint-Pierre de Pouilly-lès-Feurs, built in the 11th and 12th centuries, is a remarkable example of Romanesque architecture in the Forez. It is intimately linked to the Clunisian priory founded in 966, whose current buildings date back to the 12th and 15th centuries. The church, classified as a historic monument in 1911, is distinguished by its massive square bell tower, its polygonal column façade decorated with historic capitals, as well as by furniture elements such as a 16th-century bentier or a 14th-century reliquary.

The town of Pouilly-lès-Feurs, fortified in the 15th century, preserves remains of its medieval past, including ramparts with nine towers and two gates. The priory, a spiritual and economic centre, played a key role in local development, as evidenced by the vaulted rooms, the dungeons, and a still visible justice room. The chapel Saint-Benoît, mentioned from the 18th century, and the Gallo-Roman archaeological discoveries (currency, ceramics) near Sault Creek highlight the former occupation of the site, from ancient to modern times.

The excavations carried out in the 20th century revealed Roman artifacts (e.g. coins, tiles, pipes) dating from the 1st to the 2nd century, confirming an ancient human presence. The monument is thus part of a historical continuity, from the segusiave remains (Gaulian people) to the Clunisian period, through the defensive transformations of the late Middle Ages. Today, the college and its architectural environment (reparts, château de Pravieux) form a coherent heritage complex, reflecting the political and religious developments of the region.

The annual Rempart festival, created to showcase this heritage, illustrates the contemporary cultural vitality of the site. The associated musical springboards, such as the one won in 2006 by Jack Sparrow, reinforce the link between history and modernity. The collegiate, communal property, remains a symbol of identity for Pouilly-lès-Feurs, between medieval memory and local dynamism.
