Origin and history

The Collège Saint-Sauveur de Grignan, located in the Drôme (Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes), was built between 1535 and 1544 under the impulse of Louis Adhémar de Monteil, ambassador to Rome and close to François I. The building, originally designed as a funeral church for the Adhémar family, replaces an old parish church of Saint John the Baptist. Its architecture blends southern Gothic (ddogive vaults, flamboyant roses) and ancient influences, especially in its portal, inspired by the Roman stays of its sponsor. The papal bubble of 1539 erected the church as a collegiate, increasing its income and prestige.

The college is inseparable from the castle of Grignan, whose south-west flank it marries. Its terrace, rare in France, offers an exceptional view of the region and serves as a cover to the building, a technique similar to that of the Château de Chambord. Damaged during the Wars of Religion (1568), it was restored in the 17th century by Louis-Gaucher de Castellane-Adhémar, who added a baroque altarpiece (1632) and a balustrade. The Marquise de Sévigné, the daughter-in-law of the lords of Grignan, was buried there in 1696; His grave, under the terrace, makes him a literary pilgrimage site.

The interior houses artistic treasures: an organ of 1662 (the oldest of the Drôme), 17th century woodwork, and paintings such as La Transfiguration (1630) or La Déposition de croix, offered by Napoleon III. The chapel of the Virgin, opened in 1681, and the stalls of the Canons (1543) bear witness to its religious and social role. Ranked as early as 1840, the collegiate society enjoyed continuous restorations, especially in the 19th century for its vaults and terrace, weakened by infiltrations.

The ancient portal (1539–142), attributed to the master mason Antoine Soysson, and the monumental staircase (19th century) underline its status as an emblematic monument. The collegiate church also illustrates the religious tensions of the period: saccaded by the Huguenots in 1568, it was redeveloped to separate the canonial and parish offices after 1602. Its history thus reflects the political, artistic and spiritual changes from the Renaissance to the modern era.

Today, the college remains a symbol of Drômois heritage, linked to both local history (Adhémar family), literature (Sévigné) and architectural innovation. Its terrace cover, fantastic gargoyles and classified organ make it a major site, managed by the municipality and open to the visit. Local associations, such as the one for its preservation, perpetuate its maintenance and enhancement.
