Origin and history

The enclosure of Colmars is a military fortification located in the commune of Colmars, in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department. Built in the 17th century, it consists of a main wall and two distinct forts: Fort de France and Fort de Savoie. These defensive elements illustrate the strategic importance of the region at that time, marked by border tensions and increased protection needs.

Classified as historical monuments in 1923, the enclosure was the subject of a major restoration campaign in the late 1970s. The commune of Colmars allocated 40,000 francs for this work, representing a quarter of the total local investment budget. This initiative reflects a desire to preserve the architectural and historical heritage, in a context of valuing the monuments of Haute-Provence.

Available sources, including the Merimée inventory and local publications such as the Haute-Provence architectural heritage (1980), underline the importance of this site. The enclosure is part of a wider network of alpine fortifications, reflecting geopolitical dynamics and military techniques of the modern era. Its continuous maintenance allows today to perpetuate this historical legacy for future generations.
