Le pigeonnier (Box B 62): inscription by order of 21 December 2009
Origin and history
The Grilhon dovecote is a circular dovecote tower built between the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Located in Carbonne, in the Haute-Garonne department, it is distinguished by its pink brick architecture, typical of the Toulouse Renaissance style, and its dome called "Mouresque". This monument is integrated into the centre of the courtyard of the Carbonne retirement home at 31 rue Étienne-Prosjean.
The dovecote was listed as historical monuments by order of 21 November 2009. Its vaulted structure has retained most of its original provisions, making it a remarkable example of this type of agricultural and seigneurial building. The property now belongs to the commune of Carbonne, although its access to the public is not explicitly documented.
The dovecotes, like that of the Grilhon, were historically symbols of prestige and seigneurial rights in Occitanie. Their construction in pink brick reflects the architectural influence of the Renaissance in the Toulouse region, while their primary function – the breeding of pigeons – met local food and economic needs. This monument illustrates the rural and artisanal heritage of Haute-Garonne.
