Origin and history
The Louis XVIII column, located in the district of Courgain in Calais, commemorates the landing of King Louis XVIII on April 24, 1814. This monument, erected with the consent of the sovereign, bears a bronze plaque engraved with the royal print and a commemorative text. Its construction is in the context of the Restoration, after the fall of the Napoleonic Empire.
Initially installed on the wharf, the column was moved in 1939 to avoid the destructions related to the port's work, and then relocated in 1965 to its current location. Ranked a historic monument in 1933, it is composed of superimposed stone blocks and bears witness to the symbolic importance of Calais as the gateway to Louis XVIII in France.
The choice of Calais by Louis XVIII can be explained by his willingness to quickly return to French territory. Solicited by a municipal delegation, the king chose this city because of its geographical proximity to England, where he resided in exile. The column, owned by the municipality, remains a tangible vestige of this major political event.
