Origin and history

Farges-les-Chalon is a road terminal dating from the Ancien Régime. Originally located in Champforgeuil, it was moved to its current location, on a private property of the Grande Rue in Farges-lès-Chalon. This type of monument was used to mark roads and distances under the Old Regime, playing an essential role in the organization of travel and trade.

Ranked a historic monument by decree of 31 October 1939, this terminal bears witness to the history of road infrastructure in Burgundy-Franche-Comté. Today, it is preserved as a vestige of local heritage, although its access is restricted due to its location on a private property. Its listing reflects the emphasis placed on preserving historical elements related to transport and spatial planning.

The pillar is listed in heritage databases, such as Mérimée, with precise information on its location and legal status. It illustrates the evolution of road-signalling techniques and the attention paid to the conservation of historic objects, even modest ones, in the Saône-et-Loire region.
