Origin and history
The Commanderie de Coudrie, located in Challans in the Vendée department, is one of the first commissions of the Templiers en Poitou, founded around 1130. Its church, characteristic of the Templar buildings, is distinguished by its rectangular shape, thick foothills and flat bedside. This monument, classified as Historical Monuments in 1995, illustrates 12th century military religious architecture, with traces of 15th century remodelling and 16th century painted decorations.
After the dissolution of the Order of the Temple, the commandory passed to the Hospitallers, then to the orders of Rhodes and Malta. This historic site bears witness to the influence of religious-military orders in the region, especially in the territorial and spiritual organization of the Middle Ages. The chapel, now owned by the commune of Challans, is a rare vestige of this time, preserved despite historical upheavals.
In 2024, the commissionory hosted a volunteer project organized by the association Chantier Histoire et Architecture Medievales. These volunteers carry out light restoration work, such as clearing or rebuilding walls, thus contributing to the preservation of this medieval heritage. This project is part of a process of valorisation of the site, while respecting its historical authenticity.
The Challans region, located on the edge of the Breton Marais and close to the Atlantic coast, has always been a strategic crossroads. In the Middle Ages, it was under the control of the baronie de Commequiers, during which time the city developed thanks to its fairs. The Coudrie Commanderie is part of this context of economic and religious dynamism, reflecting the importance of military orders in the structuring of the territory.
The commune of Coudrie, formerly independent, was attached to Challans by royal ordinance in 1827. This connection has helped to preserve sites such as the command office, which are now an integral part of the local heritage. The chapel, with its classified plot, remains a major architectural and historical testimony of the Templar and Hospitalier heritage in Vendée.
Finally, the Commandery of Coudrie is part of a landscape marked by a human occupation dating back to prehistory, as evidenced by the local megaliths. Its history is also linked to major regional events, such as the Vendée Wars, which marked the town of Challans and its environs in the 18th century.
