Origin and history

The Commanderie d'Ensignée is a monument located in the town of Ensignée, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. Although its existence is attested, the available sources do not specify its construction period or detailed history. This type of building, often linked to religious or military orders, generally played a central role in the local organization, combining spiritual, economic and sometimes defensive functions.

In the regional context of New Aquitaine, commanderies were frequently associated with Templars or Hospitallers in the Middle Ages. They served as relays for pilgrims, agricultural centres or places for collecting resources. Their presence often reflected the importance of commercial or religious routes, as well as the structure of the territory around ecclesiastical or seigneurial powers.
