Origin and history

The command office of Saint-Jean-des-Prés, located at Montbrison in the Loire, was founded in 1154 by the Order of Hospitallers of Saint John of Jerusalem. Today, this historic monument preserves only its church, whose Romanesque nave dates from the 12th century, while the choir, from the 14th and 15th centuries, was transformed into a home in the 19th century. The original vault was replaced by a structure in the 17th century, and the building is now decommissioned.

The convent buildings, built in the 15th century, were destroyed in 1970, leaving only the church, partially classified by decree of 20 December 1990. The exact address, 11 dead end of the Commandery, corresponds to the Cadastre BL 36. The site, although closed to the visit, bears witness to the influence of Hospitallers in the region, mixing medieval religious architecture and subsequent redevelopments.

Located in the commune of Montbrison (code Insee 42147), in the Loire department in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, the commanderie illustrates the medieval hospital heritage. Its location, noted as "a priori satisfactory" (level 6/10), allows to locate its historical location, although the visual sources (Street View) and GPS data confirm its current address. No information is available on any services (visits, rentals) or contemporary reuse.
