Origin and history

The convent of the Capuchins of Saint-Amour was founded in 1628, but its major reconstruction took place in the first half of the 18th century. This monument, surrounded by high walls, adopts a grid plan with two main building bodies: one dating from the 18th century to the south, the other from the 19th century to the north, connected by an intermediate structure of the 18th century. The chapel, still visible, houses a painted decoration depicting plant motifs, religious symbols and inscriptions. The former refectory, transformed into a pharmacy, is decorated with woodwork and paintings illustrating laboratory instruments and medicinal herbs.

In 1808, the convent was acquired to expand the local hospital. The site, classified as Historic Monument in 2012, includes the original courtyards, garden and fences. Its structure reflects the architectural and functional changes between the 18th and 19th centuries, marked by its transition from a religious place to hospital and public use.

The protected elements cover the entire convent, including its exterior spaces such as the east and west courtyards, as well as the north and east fences. The building, owned by a public institution, preserves traces of its history through its interior decorations and its spatial organization, testifying to its adaptation to the changing needs of the community of Saint-Amour.
