Former convent, namely the church, the old convent buildings, the caves, gardens and terraces (Box K 496): inscription by decree of 16 June 1994

Origin and history

The Convent of the Recollets of Bonnieux is a convent building founded in 1604 or 1605, according to the sources. Located in the commune of Bonnieux, in Vaucluse, it is part of the religious heritage of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. His church was consecrated in 1664, marking an important milestone in his architectural and spiritual history. Conventual buildings underwent significant changes on two occasions: at the end of the 18th century and at the end of the 19th century, reflecting the stylistic and functional evolutions of the period.

In 1994, the entire convent, including the church, the old convent buildings, caves, gardens and terraces, was listed as historical monuments. This protection recognizes the heritage value of the site, both for its architecture and its historical role in the local community. The convent is located precisely at 100 Aristide Briand Avenue in the centre of Bonnieux, and its inscription covers cadastre K 496.

The convent of the Recollets illustrates the importance of beggars in southern France in the seventeenth century. These institutions played a central role in the religious, social and cultural life of provençal towns and villages. They served as places of prayer, reception for pilgrims, and sometimes as centres for education or assistance to the poorest. Their architecture, often sober but functional, reflected the ideals of simplicity and devotion of these orders.
