Origin and history
The Convent des Religieuses-de-Notre-Dame d'Avignon is a religious monument located in the city of Avignon. Its construction dates back to the second half of the 17th century, a period marked by the expansion of the convents in France. This type of building then played a central role in the spiritual and social life of cities, hosting religious communities dedicated to prayer, education or charitable works.
At that time, Avignon, then under pontifical influence, was a major cultural and religious home in Provence. The convents were places of power and influence, often supported by local elites. Their architecture reflected the Baroque or classical artistic currents, while adapting to the needs of the communities they housed.
These institutions were actively involved in urban structure and the daily life of the inhabitants.
