Origin and history

The Puy-en-Velay Visitation Convent is a religious building located in the town of Puy-en-Velay, in the Haute-Loire, in the heart of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Founded in the 19th century, it is part of the local classical architectural tradition, with a chapel built in 1837 and conventual buildings enlarged between 1843 and 1846. This site, which also housed a boarding school, is now protected for its historical and landscaped heritage, including terraced gardens, fenced wall, basin, washhouse and oratory.

The Visitandines, expelled from their original convent in Platrière Square during the Revolution, settled in 1808 in the former Saint-Maurice convent of the Refuge, dating from 1687. The present chapel, designed by Canon Péala, replaces a church deemed too small. Its classic style, marked by a monumental portal, an oculus and a triangular pediment, reflects the persistent local architectural influences in the 19th century. The gardens, organized in terraces, recall the typical religious and civil properties of the region.

The whole convent, including the chapel, the choir of the nuns, the vestibule and the exterior spaces, was inscribed in the historical monuments by order of 21 March 2005. Today, the site belongs to a diocesan association and retains a major heritage value, both for its architecture and for its role in the religious and social history of Puy-en-Velay.
