Origin and history

The Cordeliers de Casteljaloux convent is a former Catholic convent located in the commune of Casteljaloux, Lot-et-Garonne, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. Originally founded in the 13th century, it has experienced several destructions and reconstructions over the centuries, notably during the wars of Religion and Huguenot revolts.

The convent was destroyed for the first time in 1568, during the Third Religion War, and again in 1621, during the first Huguenot rebellion. It was rebuilt in 1633. In the 19th century, the convent, including its cloister, was transformed into a hospice, while the adjoining church became the chapel of this hospital.

Today, the hospice is the local hospital of Casteljaloux. The convent church, located northwest of the site, has been classified as a historic monument since November 26, 1998. The convent is located northeast of the city, 11 rue de l'Hôpital, near the Maison du Roy, which now houses the Casteljaloux tourist office.
