Origin and history
The Minimes de la Plaine convent, founded in 1494 in Saint-Martin-d'Hères (Isère), is an emblematic religious building in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. It was established by Laurent Alleman, bishop of Grenoble and uncle of the famous knight Bayard, as well as François de Paule. This convent became the provincial seat of the Order of Minimes, but was gradually abandoned in favour of the convent of the Minimes of Grenoble, founded in 1646. Despite several fires, some architectural elements, such as an ogival hall and an octagonal bell tower, still remain today.
At the French Revolution, the convent was sold as a national good. In 1982, he was registered as a historical monument and then bought by the commune in 1986 to set up cultural activities. He also housed the burial of Knight Bayard until 1822, when his remains were transferred to the collegiate Saint-André of Grenoble. In 2007, a fire ravaged part of the building, leading to a safeguard procedure.
The convent of the Plain Minimes illustrates the religious and cultural history of the region. Its architecture, marked by medieval and classical elements, bears witness to its past importance. Today, although partially damaged, it remains a symbol of local heritage, linked to historical figures such as Bayard and the Order of Minimes.
