Origin and history

Carteret's guard corps is a military building built in the 18th century, in the Manche department, in the commune of Barneville-Carteret. It is part of the defensive network designed to protect the Cotentin coasts under the Old Regime, including the entrance to Carteret Harbour and the anchorage in front of the Cape. The associated battery is dated precisely from 1745, illustrating the strategic concerns of the time in the face of maritime threats.

The monument is located at La Corniche, near the coast. Its remains, which are listed in the historic monuments by order of 24 November 1995, include a artillery platform, a warehousing watch post, a powder shop, a guard house, and traces of barracks. These elements reflect the logistical and defensive organization put in place to monitor and protect this strategic area of the Normandy coast.

Originally, this guard was integrated into a broader coastal defence system, reflecting the geopolitical tensions of the time, including the risks of invasions or enemy raids. The Cotentin peninsula, which was positioned in the English Channel, was a vulnerable point that needed to be secured. The registration of the site in 1995 highlights its heritage value as an architectural and historical example of the coastal fortifications of the Old Regime.

Today, the guard corps is owned by the Department of the English Channel. Although its current condition and accessibility are not detailed in the sources, its location at Address 1 Route du Semaphore allows to locate it precisely. The available data (Merimée, Monumentum) confirm its past role and its preservation as a witness to Norman military heritage.
