Origin and history

The Court of Justice of Asnières-sur-Vègre, also known as Le Temple, is an emblematic building located in the municipality of Asnières-sur-Vègre, Sarthe (Pays de la Loire). Its construction dates back to the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, during which time it served as the seat of the local ecclesiastical seigneury. This monument illustrates the evolution of seigneurial functions, from a judicial role to an aristocratic residence and then to an agricultural holding.

In the 15th century, the building became a gentilhommière, reflecting the social and economic transformations of the period. In the 18th century, it was converted into a farmhouse, marking its adaptation to agricultural needs. In the 19th century, the building was divided into apartments, reflecting its gradual integration into the urban fabric. Since 1972, it has been owned by the municipality, and the building is classified as a Historic Monument in 1991, thus preserving its architectural and historical heritage.

Among its remarkable features are a 13th-XVth-century chimney on the floor and another, dated 1606, on the ground floor. These details highlight the successive phases of construction and development. Today, the Court of Justice remains a symbol of the seigneurial and judicial past of Asnières-sur-Vègre, while being part of the village's contemporary life.
