Origin and history

The circular enclosure of La Couillardière is a medieval vestige typical of the 11th and 12th centuries, located in the commune of Rânes, in the department of l'Orne. This monument, classified as a château à motte, is characterized by a double fossil structure, with a central motte of 19 meters in diameter and a preserved bassyard. Its precise location, instead of the Couillardière, reflects a strategic occupation during the Middle Ages, a period marked by feudality and the construction of local fortifications for territorial control.

The enclosure was partially preserved, with the exception of its ditch partially filled over time. It was officially recognized for its heritage importance by registration as historic monuments on 6 September 1994. This type of structure, common in Normandy, illustrates the defensive architecture of the time, where the castral mots served as monitoring points and refuges for local populations. Dry ditches and surrounding slopes, such as those observed on this site, reinforced protection against intrusions.

The oval lowyard, bounded by a ditch and slope to the south, suggests a spatial organization designed to house agricultural, artisanal or military activities. These fora often played a central role in the local economy, serving as storage, workshop or temporary market. Their presence also reflects the social dynamics of the time, where feudal lords exercised their authority through these symbolic and functional constructions.

Today, the site remains a studied example of Normandy's medieval heritage, although its state of conservation and the accuracy of its location (estimated as fair according to the sources) sometimes limit its accessibility or tourist value. The available data, from sources such as Monumentum or Wikipedia, highlight its archaeological interest, particularly in understanding the evolution of fortification techniques between the 11th and 12th centuries in Lower Normandy.
