Origin and history

The cemetery cross of Courlaoux is a historical monument located in the commune of Courlaoux, in the department of Jura (39), in the region Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. Dating from the 2nd quarter of the 16th century, it embodies a typical example of late medieval cemetery crosses, often associated with collective burial sites in villages.

This cross was inscribed as a Historic Monument by order of 26 October 1927, thus recognizing its heritage value. Owned by the municipality, it is close to Rue des Écoles, according to the contact details available. Although its precise location is considered mediocre (note 5/10), it remains a symbolic landmark for local history.

In the 16th century, the cemetery crosses played a central role in the religious and social life of rural communities. They marked the sacred space of the cemetery, often around the church, and served as a gathering point for funeral ceremonies. Their presence also reflected the importance of the Christian faith in the spatial and spiritual organization of the villages of Franche-Comté.

Available data from Monumentum and the Merimée database indicate that this cross is one of the few protected heritage elements of Courlaoux. Its state of conservation and accessibility are not specified, but its registration under the Historical Monuments guarantees a form of preservation. The associated photograph, produced by Benoît Prieur under the Creative Commons license, offers a visual testimony of this heritage.
