Origin and history
The Cours Saint-Mauris, located in Dole, has its origins since 1691 with its layout by public promenade. Between 1717 and 1722 work added a gate, a gate and a treed esplanade. Around 1800, Claude-François Attriret rearranged the lower courtyard and installed the Lion's fountain, while in 1824 four 18th-century statues were placed there. These first transformations reflect a desire for urban beautification and the creation of a place of sociability for the inhabitants.
The second half of the 19th century marked a major overhaul of the site by landscape architect Br. Michel. Between 1875 and 1876, a landscape garden with basin and water jet was created, followed in 1885 by the addition of a music kiosk. These developments are part of the movement of the public hygienist and recreational gardens, typical of the period. In 1902, a memorial dedicated to Pasteur was erected, strengthening the heritage and memorial dimension of the site.
In the 20th century, the course of Saint-Mauris evolved with the replacement of chestnut trees by lime trees in 1950, and then transformations in the 1970s. Ranked Historical Monument in 1994 for its architectural and sculptural elements (statues, Pasteur monument), it illustrates the evolution of public spaces from the 17th to the 19th century. Today, it remains an emblematic place of Dole, mixing history, art and nature.
