Staircase says to the stone balls with its pilasters and its wrought iron ramp: inscription by decree of 16 January 1951

Origin and history

The convent of the Visitation of Salins-les-Bains, located in the Jura department (39), is a religious building built in the early eighteenth century. This monument, classified among the Historical Monuments, is distinguished by its architecture and decorative elements, including a stone staircase decorated with balls and equipped with a wrought iron ramp. These characteristics earned him official protection by ministerial decree in 1951, highlighting his heritage value.

The convent is located at 9 rue du Temple, in an area whose geographical accuracy is estimated to be fair (note 5/10). Although the available sources do not detail its current use, its inscription in the title of Historical Monuments bears witness to its cultural and architectural importance in the region of Franche-Comté, which is now integrated into Burgundy-Franche-Comté. Data from the Merimée database and Monumentum confirm its historical anchoring in the municipality of Salins-les-Bains, marked by the Insee code 39500.

At the time of its construction, at the beginning of the eighteenth century, convents played a central role in the social and spiritual life of thermal cities such as Salins-les-Bains. These religious institutions often served as places of retirement, education or care, while participating in the local economy through artisanal or agricultural activities. In an area known for its saline and thermal springs, the Visitation convent was probably part of a network of institutions contributing to the cultural and religious influence of the city.
