Origin and history
The Cordeliers d'Auch convent, located in the town of Auch in Occitanie, is a 14th century religious building. Today, only eighteen spans of the cloister are left behind the north wall of the old church. The capitals, simply ground without sculptures, supported marble columns, most of which were scattered throughout the city. The archatures have an ornamental pattern in trilobe, characteristic of the architecture of the period.
The remains of the cloister were classified as historical monuments by order of 24 November 1923, while the capitular hall was inscribed on 13 April 1933. These protections testify to the heritage importance of this site, despite the partial disappearance of its original elements. The convent illustrates the medieval and religious heritage of the region, marked by the influence of beggars like the Cordeliers.
The location of the convent, now specified at 4 Place Denfert-Rochereau in Auch, makes it a central element of the local heritage. Although some parts have been dismantled or reused, the preserved remains provide an overview of 14th century monastic architecture. The site, partly private and communal property, remains a testimony of the religious and urban history of Auch.
Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, confirm its status as a historical monument and its role in the architectural landscape of Gers. The marble columns, though scattered, recall the past of this convent, while the trilobed archatures highlight its late Gothic style. This heritage, though fragmentary, continues to generate interest in the medieval history of Occitanie.
The absence of sculptures on capitals and the simplicity of mouldings could reflect a sober aesthetic, typical of Franciscan buildings. The Cordeliers convent is thus part of a tradition of architectural modesty, contrasting with other more adorned religious monuments of the same period. Its current state calls for reflection on the preservation and reinterpretation of historical remains.
Finally, the mention of this convent in the lists of historical monuments of Auch and its referencing in bases like Mérimée reinforce its heritage visibility. Despite the documentary gaps in its precise use or its occupants, its ranking attests to its historical and artistic value for the Midi-Pyrénées region, now integrated into Occitanie.
