Origin and history
The convent of the Cordeliers of Beaucaire, founded in the 16th century, was a religious establishment of which today only remains the portal. The latter, classified as Historic Monument in 2006, was moved and integrated into the urban fabric. It is distinguished by its careful architecture: two ionic pilasters frame a door surmounted by an entably decorated with rinceaux. The key to the lintel has a shield supported by love, while a niche and carved flowerpots complete the set.
The decoration of the portal reveals a classical influence, with patterns such as love heads, draperies and urns. An elliptical egg eye pierces the upper part, adding an elegant touch. The shield, although partially erased, suggests a link with a noble sponsor or family of the period, typical of the monumental 16th century achievements in Languedoc.
The current address of the portal, 26 rue Eugène-Vigne in Beaucaire, corresponds to its location after transfer. The location data place it with an accuracy considered "a priori satisfactory". This vestige illustrates the importance of begging orders in the region, as well as their artistic heritage, often preserved despite the disappearance of the original buildings.
