Origin and history

The convent of the Recollets of Saint-Malo is a religious building built during the first half of the seventeenth century, more precisely in 1642 according to available sources. It is located in the commune of Saint-Malo, in Ille-et-Vilaine, in the north of Brittany, at 9 rue des Vieux-Remparts, in the intra-mural district. This convent, typical of the religious architecture of the time, reflects the importance of the order of the Recollets in the region.

The monument has been partially protected as historical monuments since 14 February 1946. This protection specifically concerns its cloister, gate, bridge on the street, as well as facades and roofs. These architectural elements, characteristic of the seventeenth century, illustrate the sober and functional style of the convents of this period.

The Recollet convent is part of a historical context marked by the influence of the Catholic Church in Brittany. At that time, begging orders like the Recollets played a central role in the spiritual and social life of port cities like Saint Malo. Their presence contributed to the religious guidance of the people, while participating in assistance to the poorest.

Today, the convent is located in an intramural area of Saint-Malo, a fortified historical area that attracts many visitors. Although some parts of the building are protected, information on its current access (visits, rentals, accommodation) is not specified in the available sources.
