Origin and history

The so-called "Laiterie des Sablons" was installed at the beginning of the 20th century in the 16th arrondissement of Paris. This iconic trade, typical of the time, offered quality dairy products, such as d'Isigny butter, whipped cream, selected cheeses and farm milk, with a home delivery service. The front, always visible, has a large panel under glass that is located in these specialities, reflecting the importance of local shops in the Parisian life of the time.

The interior decor of the cream shop is remarkable, including its ceiling in glass slabs, made by Charles Anselme's workshop, an artisan decorator whose name remains associated with this place. The front and interior decoration were protected by an inscription at the Historic Monuments in 1984, recognizing their heritage value. This type of establishment illustrates the evolution of food and commercial habits in Paris at the beginning of the twentieth century, where fresh and local products played a central role in the daily lives of the inhabitants.

Located at 28 rue des Sablons, this cream shop is an architectural and social testimony of its time. Although GPS coordinates suggest a slightly different address (26 rue des Sablons), the archives of the Merimée base confirm its historical location. Today, this monument offers an overview of the craft techniques and commercial practices that characterized the affluent districts of Paris, such as the 16th arrondissement, at the turn of the century.
