14th century stone cross located in the woods 1 km from the village: inscription by decree of November 10, 1925
Origin and history
The Semond Cross, dated from the 14th century, is a stone calvary located about 1 km from the village, in a wooded environment. This monument, typical of the Châtillonnais, is one of the many medieval crosses that marked the country roads or local pilgrimage places. He was listed as a Historic Monument by order of November 10, 1925, emphasizing his heritage importance and his remarkable state of conservation for the time.
The Châtillonnais, a region rich in abbeys and castles, has several types of stone crosses: the cemetery crosses, the monumental crosses (often placed near the churches) and the calvaries, such as that of Semond, which marked the rural paths. The latter, frequent in agricultural areas, served as spiritual or commemorative landmarks, linked to local religious practices or pilgrimages. Their presence reflects the importance of the Christian faith in the organization of medieval territories, where these monuments played a symbolic and practical role for rural communities.
Unlike the cemetery or monumental crosses, often associated with parish spaces, the calvaries such as Semond's were implanted in nature, away from the dwellings. Their current isolation is due to the transformation of landscapes and agricultural uses since the Middle Ages. The Semond Cross, owned by the commune, remains a rare testimony of this rural religious heritage, now protected for its historical and architectural value.
