Sixteenth century cross located in the cemetery: inscription by decree of November 10, 1925

Origin and history

The monumental cross of Thoisy-le-Désert, classified as a Historic Monument since 1925, is distinguished by its complex architecture. Its square base with chamfered edges rests on a circular base, while the octagonal barrel, surmounted by a moulure capital, supports a cross with flowered ends. The openworked redents of the cross add a decorative dimension to the whole, typical of the religious achievements of the late Middle Ages or early Renaissance.

Although dated from the 16th century, this cross has heteroclite elements suggesting reshaping. The base, ill adapted to the base, seems to come from another cross, while the barrel and the lower part of the stem (including the console of the Virgin of Mercy) were redone, probably in the early twentieth century. These changes reflect a desire to preserve or adapt to local liturgical needs.

Located in the cemetery of Thoisy-le-Désert in Burgundy-Franche-Comté, this cross bears witness to the importance of funeral monuments in rural villages. Its inscription in the inventory of Historic Monuments in 1925 underscores its heritage value, linked to its hybrid style combining medieval heritage and renaissant influences. The communal property now ensures its conservation, although its exact location remains approximate according to available sources.
