Origin and history
La Croix de Cemetery d'Airoux is a 16th-century discoidal stele, located in the Aude department, Occitanie region. It is distinguished by its decoration of cords on the slice and a face adorned with a patted cross, while its reverse remains flat and without ornament. Originally placed north of the central alley of the cemetery, it was moved before 1964 to be sealed south of the bedside of the church, alongside three other crosses.
Registered as a historical monument in 1948, this cross was the subject of a request for deregistration by the Airoux City Council, due to its displacement outside the cemetery. This deregistration was finally formalized by an order of 30 January 2012. Despite this, a request for registration of objects was made, emphasizing its heritage importance.
The cross reflects funeral and religious practices of the modern era in Languedoc, where discoidal steles were common. These monuments served both as funeral markers and symbols of faith, often in places of worship or cemeteries. Their sober decor, like that of the cross of Airoux, bears witness to a local artistic tradition rooted in Christian spirituality.
