Origin and history

The cemetery cross of Monistrol-d'Allier is a monumental cross located in the Haute-Loire department, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Dating from the 15th century, it is distinguished by its granite structure for the barrel and black stone carved for the upper part. This monument is emblematic of medieval funeral art, mixing religious symbols and architectural elements characteristic of the era.

The cross has two carved faces: one represents a Pietà, where the Virgin holds the body of Christ on her knees, while the other shows Christ on a cross. Two characters, carved on the lamp asses, frame these scenes. The barrel bears engraved coats of arms, illustrating a pilgrimage shell crossed by a stick, a strong symbol of the Middle Ages linked to the roads of Compostela.

Classified as historical monuments by decree of 26 September 1910, this cross bears witness to the importance of funeral monuments in medieval villages. It reflects both the religious devotion of the time and the know-how of local artisans in stone sculpture. Its location in the Monistrol-d'Allier cemetery highlights its central role in the community's collective memory and spiritual practices.

Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, confirm its status as communal property and its openness to the public. Although its precise location is estimated to be mediocre (level 5 out of 10), it remains a major historical point of interest for the region, attracting enthusiasts of sacred art and medieval history.
