Origin and history
La Croix Hosannière de Chermignac is an emblematic monument located in the commune of Chermignac, Charente-Maritime. Dating from the 15th century, it embodies the medieval religious architecture of the region. Classified as historical monuments since 1906, it stands in front of Saint Quentin Church, highlighting its importance in the local heritage landscape.
The Hosannière crosses, typical of the Middle Ages, often served as a gathering place for religious processions, especially during Easter holidays. Their presence reflected the centrality of the Christian faith in the daily life of rural communities. In Chermignac, this cross, although little documented in its specific details, is part of this tradition, marking the sacred space around the parish church.
The classification of the cross in 1906 reflects its recognition as a major heritage element. Owned by the commune, it is today a tangible vestige of the religious and architectural history of Charente-Maritime. Its precise location, near the church, strengthens its link with the medieval and post-medieval practices of the region.
