Fifteenth century cross erected in front of the church: by decree of 21 March 1910

Origin and history

The Amathay-Vesigneux Cross is a 15th century religious monument located in the municipality of Amathay-Vesigneux in the Doubs department. This calvary, 5 meters high, is one of the few crosses before the seventeenth century still preserved. He represents a Christ on a cross, accompanied by the Virgin, Saint John and an angel. Its style and iconography reflect the artistic and devotional traditions of the late Middle Ages in Franche-Comté.

The cross was classified as historical monuments on March 21, 1910, recognizing its heritage and historical value. It is located in front of the village church, suggesting its central role in local religious life. This type of monument often served as a gathering point for community processions or prayers, strengthening the social and spiritual cohesion of the inhabitants.

From an architectural point of view, this cross is distinguished by its imposing size and remarkable conservation, despite the centuries that have passed. It bears witness to the importance of Christian symbolism in the region, where calvaries played a role both religious and memorial. Today, it remains a key element of local heritage, managed by the municipality and accessible to the public.
