Forged iron cross and granite base, in front of Notre-Dame de la Vie chapel: by order of 5 February 1944

Origin and history

The wrought iron cross and granite base, located in Saint-Martin-de-Belleville (Savoie), date from the seventeenth century. This monument, classified by decree of February 5, 1944, is located in front of the chapel Notre-Dame de la Vie. It is owned by the municipality and bears witness to the local craftsmanship of the period.

In the seventeenth century, monumental crosses were often erected to mark places of devotion or important crossroads. In mountainous regions such as Savoy, these monuments also served as landmarks for travellers and pilgrims. Their presence reflected the importance of religion in the daily lives of rural communities.

The precise location of this cross, in front of the Notre-Dame de la Vie chapel, suggests a link with local religious practices. The available GPS coordinates indicate an approximate position in Saint-Marcel, in the commune of Belleville. The accuracy of this location is considered fair (note 5/10).
