Origin and history
The cross of Sail-sous-Cuzan is a granite cross of circular section, composed of several elements. Its arms have circular ends, and it rests on a molded base richly decorated with bas-reliefs and high reliefs. The massive base has dates 1642 (in bas-relief) and 1812 (grated), indicating two key periods in its history. Originally, it was located at Couzan Castle, before being moved to the hamlet of Culvé in 1812.
Built in 1642 by Louis d'Urgel, Marquis de Saint-Priest and seigneur of Couzan, this cross of paths bears witness to the religious and monumental architecture of the time. It was restored after damage, including a broken tablet consolidated by a metal collar. Its inscription as a Historic Monument in 1926 underscores its heritage importance.
The cross rests on a two-degree platform, and its base has a flat band supporting a large cellar tablet. Its sculpted decor and history reflect the role of local lords in spatial planning in the 17th century. Today, it belongs to the commune and remains a remarkable vestige of this historical heritage.
