Origin and history
The cross of Limoux is a cross of road built on an engraved sandstone base, surmounted by a rustic structure. Originally, it was located on the Lapeyre road and on the municipal road 3, near the hamlet of Vendémies, 6 km southwest of Limoux. This base, dated from the tenth century, was later moved to the church of Vendemias, behind the altar. The cross, although unregistered from historical monuments in 2012, has remained classified as an object since 1947.
The base belonged historically to the town of Limoux, before Vendémies was attached to it in 1965. Its initial location probably reflected its role as a religious landmark or symbol for local travellers and residents. The rustic bill of the cross suggests a artisanal realization, typical of the monuments of this period in the region.
Administratively, the cross has undergone a statutory evolution: registered in 1952 as a historical monument, this inscription was repealed in 2012, while maintaining its classification as an object. This dual status illustrates its heritage importance, despite changes in location and legal recognition. No information is available on any sponsors or artisans who participated in its creation.
