Sixteenth century cross located in the cemetery: inscription by decree of 22 March 1929
Origin and history
The Cross of Orgeux is a historical monument located in the commune of Orgeux, Burgundy-Franche-Comté. Dating from the 16th century, it is located precisely in the village cemetery. Its architecture and location testify to the religious and funeral practices of the time, where the crosses served as both a spiritual landmark and a marker for burials.
Classified as a Historical Monument by decree of 22 March 1929, this cross is part of the communal heritage. It illustrates the importance of Christian symbols in the public and sacred spaces of Burgundy villages during the Renaissance. At that time, rural communities organized their social and religious life around such monuments, which played a central role in collective rituals and local memory.
