Origin and history
La Croix d'Agnat is a historical monument located in the village of Agnat, Haute-Loire (region Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes). Dating from the 13th century, this stone cross is located in the heart of the village, as evidenced by the archives of the Merimée base. It was listed in the Inventory of Historic Monuments by ministerial decree on 11 June 1930, highlighting its local heritage importance.
Medieval crosses like Agnat often played a symbolic and practical role in villages. They usually marked a gathering place, a crossroads, or served as a landmark for pilgrims and travellers. Their presence also reflected the importance of the Christian faith in the social and spatial organization of rural communities in the Middle Ages.
In Auvergne, these stone monuments were frequently erected near churches or central squares, strengthening their function as a collective landmark.
