Origin and history
The cross of intersection of Chappes, also called the Sainte-Anne cross, is a granite monument located in the department of Allier, about 300 meters west of the town of Chappes. Dated by about 1500 thanks to its style, it is located at the place called the Croix Sainte-Anne. Its pedestal is carved on its four sides, making it a remarkable example of the religious art of the period.
The cross was classified as historical monuments by order of 21 May 1902. She was associated at the time when Anne of France, the daughter of Louis XI, reigned over the Duchy of Bourbon. This monument illustrates the importance of crossroads crosses in the religious and social landscape of the region during the Renaissance.
Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, confirm its membership in the commune of Chappes (code Insee 03058) and its approximate location at 5009 Le Pavillon. The property of the cross belongs to the commune, and its state of conservation is documented in heritage bases like Mérimée.
