Origin and history

The Cross of the Friches is a Latin cross in granite, located near the village of Friches, near the chapel Saint-Mathurin on the commune of Saint-Martin-sur-Oust (Morbihan). It rests on a masonry base covered with a shale slab, with an engraved stone bearing the date of 1886, the year of its winding. The cross, dated from the 17th century, has a carved decoration at the crossroads of the arms: a shield with three shells or weapons evoking Brittany (three hermines).

Initially placed at the crossroads of the D149 and the road leading to Galivier, it was moved during the re-memberment. Its more recent base suggests relocation in the 19th century. The cross has been protected as historical monuments since 25 February 1928 under the property of the commune. Its style and motifs reflect the Breton religious art of the modern era.

The monument illustrates the importance of crossing crosses in the Breton landscape, often linked to places of pilgrimage or community gathering. These crosses served as spiritual and symbolic landmarks, marked by coats of arms or commemorative inscriptions. Their preservation bears witness to the local attachment to this religious and historical heritage.
