Origin and history
The cross of Cemboing is a monumental cross erected in the 4th quarter of the 16th century, located in the commune of Cemboing, in Haute-Saône (Burgogne-Franche-Comté). It is about 50 metres north of the local church. Built of Vosges sandstone, it consists of a masonry base, a massive base, and a monolithic column decorated with garlands and a twisted cord. A campaniform capital, surmounted by a cross with crucifixes decorated with plant motifs, carries a Christ. The 1577 vintage is engraved on the capital, confirming its date.
Ranked historic monument in 2006 by decree of 7 March, the cross is fully protected (cadastre A 521). It belongs to the municipality of Cemboing and bears witness to the funerary or memorial art of the Renaissance in Franche-Comté. Its architectural style, mixing sobriety and plant decorations, reflects the local artistic influences of the time, where the sandstone of the Vosges was widely used for outdoor sculptures.
The exact location of the cross, at approximately 15 Rue de l'Assumption, is documented in the Merimée base. Its state of conservation and accessibility are not detailed in the sources, but its classification attests to its heritage value. The cross is part of a rural landscape marked by religious and commemorative buildings, typical of the villages of Haute-Saône at the end of the 16th century.
