14th century carved cross, located by the road, in Châtenet: inscription by decree of 9 March 1927

Origin and history

The cross of Châtenet, located in Azat-Châtenet, is a 14th century historical monument. She is distinguished by her granite sculpture, representing on both sides a Christ on the cross. Above this figure, a head seen from the face, probably that of God the Father, touches the crowning of the cross. In between, a rough figure evoking a bird could symbolize the dove of the Holy Spirit, thus forming a representation of the Trinity.

The cross has been listed as a Historic Monument since 9 March 1927. It is located by a road, in Châtenet, and belongs to the municipality of Azat-Châtenet. Its location is approximate, with an accuracy considered fair (note of 5/10). This type of carved cross bears witness to medieval religious art and its importance in the countryside, where these monuments served as spiritual and symbolic landmarks for local communities.

Stylistic details, such as simultaneous representation of the three people of the Trinity, are rare for this period. The cross thus illustrates a complex religious iconography, unique to the Middle Ages, while reflecting the granite sculpture techniques typical of the region. Its state of conservation and its current location highlight its historical and heritage role in the local landscape.
