Origin and history
The cross de chemin de Serrières is a historical monument located in the commune of Serrières, in Ardèche (region Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes). Dated from 1663, it was erected during the 3rd quarter of the 17th century, a period marked by a strong religious presence in the French countryside. This type of cross, often placed at village entrances or intersections, served as a spiritual landmark and protection for local travellers and residents.
The cross, carved in granite, was classified as Historic Monument by decree of 15 November 1926. Today it belongs to the municipality of Serrières and is located Place des Rameaux, near the centre of the village. Crosses, such as this one, were usually financed by local donors or religious brotherhoods, and their presence reflected the importance of Christian faith in the daily life of the rural communities of the time.
The location of this cross at the entrance to the village suggests that it could also play a symbolic role, marking the border between the sacred space of the village and the outside. These monuments were often gathering places for processions or collective prayers, thus strengthening the social and religious cohesion of the community. Their preservation to this day bears witness to their heritage value and their anchoring in local history.
