Cross of path with its base (cad. D 2503) : entry by order of 11 October 1963
Origin and history
The road cross of Saint-Ciers-du-Taillon is a religious monument located in the department of Charente-Maritime, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. Dating from the seventeenth century, it illustrates the importance of Christian symbols in the French countryside of that time. Its parallelepipedic base, decorated with an engraved inscription, supports a canned column surmounted by a stone cross, probably added later.
Listed as historical monuments by order of 11 October 1963, this cross bears witness to the effort to preserve the local heritage. It is located on the departmental road 146, close to La Croix de Baudoire, and belongs to the commune. Its sober architecture, with a canned barrel and a level base, reflects regional crafts traditions.
The cross of paths, like that of Saint-Ciers-du-Taillon, served both as landmarks for travellers and as places of devotion for the inhabitants. Their location along the roads or at the crossroads highlighted their social and spiritual role in rural communities. These monuments also marked parish boundaries or commemorated local events, although their precise history is often poorly documented.
The Merimée base and sources like Monumentum confirm its protected status, while indicating an approximate location (precision noted 5/10). No information is available on any sponsors or artisans involved in its construction, or on specific historical events related to it.
