Road crossing (Case B 228): entry by order of 22 November 1993

Origin and history

La Croix de chemin de Dommartin is a monumental cross erected in the 19th century in the village of Dommartin, Doubs department. It is located in the centre of the village, close to the parish church Saint-Martin. This type of monument, typical of the French countryside, often served as a spiritual landmark and gathering place for the inhabitants.

The cross was listed as historic monuments on 22 November 1993, recognizing its heritage value. It rests on a stone base, characteristic of the road crosses of this period. Although its sponsor or artist is not mentioned in the sources, its inscription in the local landscape demonstrates the importance of religious symbols in the daily life of rural communities in the 19th century.

In the Burgundy-Franche-Comté region, the crossroads were commonly erected near churches or crossroads, marking both a place of prayer and a landmark for travellers. Their presence often reflected the social and religious organization of villages, where the Catholic faith played a central role in collective life. These monuments, although simple, were structural elements of the landscape and local memory.
