Origin and history

La Croix de chemin de Domprel is a monumental limestone cross located at the exit of the village of Domprel, on the road leading to Pierrefontaine. Dating from the 4th quarter of the 16th century, it traditionally represents Christ on the cross, originally framed by the statues of Joseph and Mary. Today, only the partially damaged statue of Mary remains alongside Christ, the statue of Joseph having disappeared.

Classified as historical monuments by decree of 29 November 1913, this cross illustrates the religious art of the late Renaissance in Franche-Comté. Its location, on a road axis, suggests a function both devotional and symbolic, marking a place of passage or protection for travellers and local inhabitants. The partial deterioration of the work reflects the hazards of time and the possible acts of vandalism or recovery experienced over the centuries.

La Croix belongs to the commune of Domprel, in the Doubs department (region Bourgogne-Franche-Comté). Its early classification, at the beginning of the twentieth century, reflects its heritage importance and the desire to preserve this sculptural testimony of the Christian faith and the regional art of the modern period. The available data do not indicate whether the monument is accessible to the public or integrated into a local tourist trail.
